Let your Words be Full of Grace

2 Mins read

Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

This verse encourages believers to speak kindly and wisely, using uplifting and beneficial words toward one another. The writer’s intention in this verse is to instruct and encourage the believers in Colossae to communicate in a way that reflects the grace and wisdom of Christ. The emphasis is on speaking in a gracious and truthful manner so that their words may positively impact those around them. The writer said this is likely to promote harmony and understanding within the Christian community and provide a positive witness to non-believers. By speaking with grace and wisdom, believers can demonstrate the love of Christ and effectively communicate the message of the gospel.

We can apply this in our lives by being mindful of our words and striving to speak in a way that reflects grace, kindness, and truth. This involves considering the impact of our words on others and seeking to build up and encourage those around us through our speech. The recommendation is to practice speaking with grace and wisdom in all interactions, whether with fellow believers or with those who do not share our faith. This can help to foster healthy relationships and create opportunities to share the message of Christ effectively.

Prayer points in this scripture could include asking for God’s guidance and wisdom in our speech, seeking His help in using our words to bring encouragement and healing to others and praying for opportunities to share the gospel through our gracious and wise communication.

The types of words that exit our mouths can generally be classified into different groups based on their nature and impact. Here are some common types of words:

  1. Encouraging Words: These are words that uplift, motivate, and inspire others. Encouraging words can bring hope, confidence, and positivity to those who hear them.
  2. Kind Words: Kind words are gentle, considerate, and compassionate. They show empathy and care for others, promoting harmony and understanding.
  3. Hurtful Words: Hurtful words are negative, critical, or offensive. They can cause pain, distress, and damage to relationships and self-esteem.
  4. Truthful Words: Truthful words convey honesty, integrity, and sincerity. They can build trust and credibility in communication.
  5. Grateful Words: Grateful words express appreciation, thankfulness, and recognition. They acknowledge the value of others and foster a spirit of gratitude.
  6. Wise Words: Wise words are thoughtful, discerning, and insightful. They offer guidance, knowledge, and understanding.
  7. Prayerful Words: Prayerful words are spoken in prayer or spiritual communication with God. They express faith, dependence on God, and desires for His will to be done.
  8. Gossip or Slanderous Words: These are words that involve spreading rumours or speaking negatively about others. They can harm reputations and create division.
  9. Profane or Offensive Words: Profane or offensive words are vulgar, disrespectful, or blasphemous. They can be hurtful and disrespectful to others and to sacred things.
  10. Loving Words: Convey affection, care, and compassion. They build connections and nurture relationships.

The Bible emphasizes the significance of using our words thoughtfully and being aware of their impact on others. Proverbs 18:21 states, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Therefore, it’s essential to be mindful of the words we speak and their potential effects on those around us.
