The Dying Words of Jesus

4 Mins read

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ stands as one of history’s most significant events, not only for its historical importance but also for the theological depth revealed through Jesus’ final words. The seven last statements Jesus made from the cross offer perhaps the most profound glimpse into His heart that we ever receive in Scripture. These final words, spoken in His deepest agony, highlight the things that mattered most to our Savior in His last moments — and what should matter most to us. These seven last sayings, spoken from the cross during His final hours, provide profound spiritual insights that continue to guide believers through their faith journeys today.

When we closely examine Jesus’ first statement, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34), we see extraordinary grace in action. Despite enduring unimaginable suffering, Jesus displayed remarkable grace. Even while experiencing excruciating pain and public humiliation, He maintained His close relationship with God the Father.

This teaches us an important lesson: regardless of our circumstances, we should never abandon our relationship with God. When facing difficulties, many of us tend to question God’s goodness or even His existence. We might ask, “If you’re a Father, why would you allow this to happen?” While it’s common for people to distance themselves from God during hard times, Jesus did the opposite.

In His darkest hour, He maintained His connection with the Father and extended forgiveness to His persecutors. This example encourages us to hold fast to our divine connection, no matter what we are going through.

The second statement — “Truly, I say to you today, you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43) — demonstrates Jesus’ authority even in His final moments. This exchange between Jesus and the two criminals crucified alongside Him presents a powerful contrast: one criminal mocked Jesus while the other recognized his own sinfulness and Jesus’ innocence. The humble acknowledgment of his need for salvation led to Jesus’ promise of eternal paradise for the repentant thief.

This interaction illustrates a straightforward path to salvation: acknowledging our sinfulness, recognizing Jesus as Savior, and placing our faith in Him. Regardless of our past, when we approach Christ with sincere repentance, He offers us the gift of eternal life. Jesus’ promise to the repentant thief — “Today you will be with me in paradise” — highlights the remarkable simplicity of salvation. The distinction between hell and heaven ultimately comes down to a humble acknowledgment of our need for a Savior. No matter our past, sincere repentance opens the door to eternal life.

The third statement — “Woman, behold your son; behold your mother” (John 19:26–27) — demonstrates Jesus’ commitment to family responsibilities, even in His final moments. Despite bearing the weight of the world’s sins, Jesus made sure that His mother would be cared for after His departure by entrusting her to the disciple John. This remarkable act illustrates how Jesus fulfilled His duties as Mary’s son while also completing His divine mission.

For believers today, this serves as a reminder that our faith should not lead us to neglect our family responsibilities. It illustrates how Jesus balanced His divine mission with human obligations — a compelling example for those navigating their family duties while fulfilling their spiritual callings.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking statement of Jesus comes in His fourth utterance: “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). This agonizing cry reveals the spiritual separation Jesus experienced as He became the bearer of our sins. Notice the shift from addressing God as “Father” to “God,” which reflects His position under divine judgment.

This temporary abandonment was necessary for our salvation, highlighting both the depth of Christ’s sacrifice and God’s absolute holiness. This cry exposes the spiritual agony Jesus faced as He bore the sins of humanity. For the first time in eternity, the perfect communion between the Father and the Son was broken as Jesus took on our sins. The shift from “Father” in His earlier statements to “My God” here illustrates His role as the sin-bearer confronting divine judgment. This momentary abandonment by God the Father was essential to our salvation, emphasizing the magnitude of Christ’s sacrifice and God’s profound disdain for sin.

The fifth statement — “I thirst” (John 19:28) — powerfully illustrates both Jesus’ humanity and His divinity. Even the source of living water experienced physical thirst, serving as a reminder that Jesus fully endured human suffering. This brief statement not only fulfills Scripture but also emphasizes that Jesus understands our physical pain because He experienced it Himself. When Jesus uttered “I thirst,” we gain insight into His complete humanity alongside His divinity, highlighting that the fountain of living water truly experienced thirst and understands our suffering from firsthand experience.

The powerful sixth statement — “It is finished” (John 19:30) — marks the completion of Christ’s work of redemption. This declaration was not a sign of defeat but a proclamation of victory. The work of salvation is complete: the debt has been fully paid, the barrier has been removed, and reconciliation has been achieved. Nothing needs to be added to Christ’s perfect sacrifice.

The Greek word “tetelestai” conveys the idea of a debt that has been completely paid off. Jesus accomplished everything necessary for humanity’s salvation — removing the barrier between God and humanity, securing justification, and achieving reconciliation. This statement assures believers that nothing needs to be added to Christ’s work; salvation is complete through His sacrifice alone.

Finally, Jesus concludes with the seventh last statement: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46). Having completed His mission, Jesus willingly surrenders His spirit to the Father. This final act of submission beautifully demonstrates His trust in the Father’s plan, even unto death. For believers today, this teaches us how to face our own mortality with confidence and trust in God’s faithful hands for life in eternity.

The seven last statements that Jesus made from the cross provide a profound insight into His heart during His final moments. These words highlight what was most important to Him and serve as a guiding framework for our spiritual journeys. They teach us essential lessons about forgiveness, the simplicity of salvation, the importance of family responsibility, and the honest expression of pain. Additionally, they encourage us to acknowledge our human limitations, recognize the completeness of Christ’s work, and trust in God’s faithful hands. Reflecting on these final words invites us to consider what truly matters in our own lives.
