“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Galatians 3:13–14)
When the word “law ” is used, it speaks of the first five books written by Moses, which is called Pentateuch. It also refers to the ten commandments and other sets of Law. In simple terms, no one can keep all these sets of laws. Once you break one, you have broken all, according to James 2:10–11. People who try to keep the Law are under the curse of the Law. No one could keep the Law perfectly. Only Jesus has kept the Law for us perfectly (Romans 8:3 –4).
To redeem means to set something or someone free from bondage or prison by paying the price for their freedom. Under the Law, you were set for destruction, and no one could redeem you (Leviticus 27:29). But thanks be unto God, for through Christ he has redeemed you. Christ paid the price for you to be released from the curse of the Law. First, he took your doomed position. Then, he paid the price by dying in your place and on your behalf. The price Christ paid was the life he gave on the cross. The life of Christ was a sacrifice offering (Ephesians 5:2), which is the cost that God paid for the release of man from under the curse of the Law.
You were not only under the curse of the Law, but you became the curse itself and were clothed with it. The Psalmist gives us a clear picture of this. Psalm 109 says, “As he loved cursing, so let it come to him; As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him. As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, So let it enter his body like water, And like oil into his bones. Let it be to him like the garment which covers him, And for a belt with which he girds himself continually.” (Psalms 109:17–19).
The above scriptures show a picture of a person who dwells in cursing and with a curse. It shows that the longer you dwell with a curse, the more you are clothed with it. It enters you, and you become like it. You become a curse. Thus, you were a curse. For anyone to redeem you, he had to be like you first in order to set you free. That is why the bible says that” Christ was made a curse for us.” Christ became like you were and then took your position. After taking your position, he pushed you out of that position into his position. Christ’s position is that of blessings.
When was “Christ made a curse for us”? He became a curse when he hung on the cross. The bible says that “cursed is everyone that hangs on a tree.” Christ took your curse and cursed position and gave you his position of blessing. That is why the bible says, “the blessing of Abraham might come on the gentiles in Christ.”
Therefore, there is no curse of the Law hanging over your head now. You are no longer under a curse. You are blessed. You are not only Blessed, but Abraham’s blessing is your blessing. You are no longer under the curse of the Law. You are blessed! Your position is a position of blessing.
Wow! Christ has redeemed you from the curse of the Law!
Christ has redeemed you from the curse of the Law. Fine. That is ok. Then, how did he redeem you? By becoming a curse for you. Why did he become a curse for you? In order to give you his position of blessing. Why give you a position of blessing? That the promise of Abraham’s blessing may become your blessing and receive the promise of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus. Therefore, any person who has received the Holy Spirit has no right to be under the curse of the Law. You are no longer under a curse. A curse cannot hang over your head. The curse of the Law can no longer descend on you, “…., So a curse without cause shall not alight.” (Proverbs 26:2).
The curse of the Law to any person who has received the Holy Spirit is causeless and cannot alight (Proverbs 26:2).
Prayer
Father in Jesus’s Name, I thank you for sending Christ to redeem me from the curse of the Law. Thank you, for I am no longer under the curse; instead, Abraham’s blessings are my blessing. Thank you, Father, In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
